Subject

In the English grammar, the subject is most often a noun or pronoun that performs an action.

For example, in the sentence: Students study English, the noun Students is the subject of the sentence.
In the sentence, She sings the song, the pronoun She is the subject of the sentence.

  • My computer was infected with a virus.
  • Plumbers are at work.
  • Jane and I went to the cinema.
  • A back cat crossed our path.
  • Mike will be mad at me!

The gerund can act as the subject:

  • Eating junk food is unhealthy.
  • Waiting too long can have long-term affects on the child.

The infinitive also can act as the subject:

  • Who to go with is a difficult question.
